Evaluating Urban Canopy's Role in Alleviating Extreme Heat: An i-Tree Cool Air Analysis

The effects of canopy and impervious cover on current and future extreme heat scenarios were evaluated with i-Tree Cool Air as part of funding from the NUCFAC Ten-Year Action Plan: 2016-2026. This study is an addition to Assessing Urban Forest Threats across the Conterminous United States (Nowak et al. 2022), which examined the distribution and intensity of projected changes on urban forest health using a cumulative risk index.
This report is intended to provide a baseline understanding of heat for Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) management and disaster risk mitigation, by understanding the spatial distribution of heat and its correlation with urban canopy. This report calls for further work in engaging the entire community, specifically disadvantaged communities (DACs), who are often exposed to the most extreme heat.
